A RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF PROPOSED WESTSIDE CONNECTOR

WHEREAS the Perimeter Business District located in the Cities of Dunwoody, Sandy Springs and Brookhaven is one of Georgia’s largest employment centers;

WHEREAS the Perimeter Business District accounts for a significant portion of the City of Dunwoody’s tax base; 

WHEREAS the Perimeter Business District attracts world class employers’ operations and headquarters to locate in the District;

WHEREAS in excess of 1­25,000 employees travel each and every workday to work in the Perimeter Business District;

WHEREAS the intersection of I-285 and Georgia 400 is one of the most heavily traveled intersections in Georgia;

WHEREAS while many of these employees use transit options such as MARTA, car pool, telecommute, and have alternative work schedules, many use the City of Dunwoody’s local streets in lieu of I-285 and/or Georgia 400;

WHEREAS the Georgia Department of Transportation working with its partners in the Perimeter Community Improvement Districts, and the Cities of Dunwoody, Sandy Springs and Brookhaven have worked diligently to alleviate traffic congestion with the implementation of the Perimeter Center Parkway bridge over I-285, Hammond Half Diamond Interchange on Georgia 400, Ashford-Dunwoody Diverging Diamond Interchange over I-285, and implementation of the Perimeter Transportation Operation Program to synchronize the District’s and surrounding traffic control signals, amongst others;

WHEREAS the Perimeter Community Improvement Districts have invested tens of millions of dollars to provide alternative mode of travel such as sidewalks and bike lanes and are in the process of developing multiuse paths throughout the district;

WHEREAS the Georgia Department of Transportation working with its partners in the Perimeter Community Improvement Districts, and the Cities of Dunwoody, Sandy Springs and Brookhaven are in the process of designing and will soon begin construction of the I-285 and Georgia 400 interchange improvements by investing over one billion dollars on this project in a continued effort to improve traffic flow and congestion;

WHEREAS the City of Dunwoody has as its goal improved traffic flow not only in the Perimeter Business District, but to reduce traffic on its neighborhood streets for the benefits of its citizens;

WHEREAS the City of Dunwoody is considering the addition of additional  on and off ramps at the Ashford-Dunwoody exit off I-285 and the creation of a through street parallel to I-285 to Perimeter Center Parkway known as the Westside Connector;

WHEREAS the Westside Connector will facilitate the commute of workers who drive to the Perimeter Business District from I-285 and improve the flow of traffic within the Perimeter Business District, contribute to the City of Dunwoody tax base with increased property values and commerce on this new street;

WHEREAS Westside Connector will result in fewer of the Perimeter Business District employees using the City of Dunwoody’s local streets and thus benefit its citizens;

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Dunwoody Perimeter Chamber does hereby support the City of Dunwoody’s investing funds to conduct the preliminary analysis and engineering needed to consider the feasibility of the Westside Connector, and that the City of Dunwoody engage its Georgia Department of Transportation, Perimeter Improvement Districts, Cities of Brookhaven and Sandy Springs, and Federal partners to garner support and funding for the construction of the Westside Connector.
